How Often Should You Tweet?

Twitter is a great place to promote your content or product and to discuss issues with your followers. But, there are no hard and fast rules for how often you should tweet.

If you’re just starting out, it can be tough to decide how much tweeting is enough as you establish your following. Even if you’re taking over an existing Twitter account, you may have some knowledge to go on, but it can take a while to find your stride and truly work out the kinks in your daily tweeting routine.

So, how often should you tweet? That depends largely on what you have to say and the methods you use to say it. Here are some things to consider to help you decide what level of tweeting is appropriate for your business.

How Much Do You Have to Say?

There’s a lot of advice out there about taking that first step on Twitter. But, you should consider what you have to say before you say it. That first tweet is often a daunting task, and a simple “Hello world!” may suffice. However, as you continue to tweet you need to figure how much you actually have to say.

If you spend your time over-thinking every tweet and grasping for things to post, then you’re probably tweeting too much. Try tweeting things like product launches, new content announcement, behind-the-scenes information, photos, blog posts, and so on. But, if there’s not much to report on, don’t force a tweet.

Am I Tweeting Too Much, Or Not Enough?

Being a part of the conversation is one of the most important aspects of being on Twitter. If your tweets consist mostly of broadcasting messages and less on interaction, you just might be tweeting about yourself too much. Focus on a variety of different types of tweets. Make sure you’re @replying to those people who have questions about your business and be sure you’re seeking out complementary content to retweet to your audience.

Be careful not to have nothing but conversations in your tweet stream, however. Too many @replies could take over your Twitter account and hide a lot of the content you want to showcase. You don’t want to turn your Twitter account into a one-sided conversation that other followers feel they cannot join.

Doing a variety of different types of tweets over the course of your day will ensure you have a well-rounded Twitter feed. At the end of the day, you are the best gauge of whether or not you’re tweeting too much or not enough. If you think your Twitter experience is helping you gain insight into your customers and get your message out there effectively, then you’re tweeting the right amount for you and your business.

What Time of Day Should I Tweet?

You may have already figured out your content strategy, but as you continue to refine it, you may ask yourself about the best times to tweet. There’s no shortage of research out there with recommendations for what times of the day you should tweet. For instance, Kiss Metrics reported that nearly half of the tweets in the United States are in the Eastern Time Zone. So, keeping your tweeting schedule aligned with this time zone might be a good plan. Also, according to Hubspot’s research, your tweets will get the most attention towards the end of the week and on the weekends.

However, the very nature of Twitter makes it a here-and-now platform. Don’t necessarily restrict yourself to what research shows is the best time to tweet. When you’ve got news to break or something to tweet, go ahead and tweet it. When there’s breaking news that your followers are interested in, then you shouldn’t worry about tweeting too much. The very reason people follow your brand or business is because they want to kn ow what you’re up to. As long as you’re addressing that need and getting good feedback from your followers, then you’re probably tweeting at the level that’s appropriate for your business.
